The single biggest practical advantage of a private villa over a hotel is not the space. It is that the service comes to you — a chef cooking in your kitchen, and someone handling the logistics so that your holiday is not a series of bookings.
But “chef and concierge” is described so loosely across villa rental sites that it is genuinely hard to know what you are getting. This guide explains how it actually works on the Riviera Maya, what it does not include, and what to pin down before you book.
What a private chef actually does
The usual arrangement is more involved than “someone cooks dinner.” In practice it looks like this:
- Before you arrive: a conversation about what your group eats — preferences, allergies, children, anyone vegetarian, how adventurous you want to be.
- Shopping: the chef buys the ingredients, usually locally and same-day, rather than you doing a supermarket run on holiday.
- Cooking: in your kitchen, at the times that suit your group — not at a restaurant’s seating hours.
- Serving and clearing: including the cleanup, which is the part people forget to value until they have cooked for twelve.
Most groups do not want a chef for every meal. The common pattern is breakfast and dinner at the villa, lunch improvised, and a few nights out at restaurants you actually wanted to try — rather than eating out because there was no alternative.
What concierge and trip planning covers
The logistics layer. Typically:
- Airport transfers — particularly worth arranging for a big group or a late arrival.
- Grocery pre-stocking — the fridge is filled before you walk in, so that first night is not a supermarket trip after a long flight. One of the most appreciated and least requested services.
- Reservations — restaurants, beach clubs, cenote and reef trips, boat days.
- Activities matched to the group — which cenote actually suits young children, which tour is worth the money.
- Celebrations — birthdays, anniversaries, and the practical side of an event.
How this works with us — honestly
Worth being straight, because most sites are vague here.
We rent villas; we do not manage them. The arrangement therefore varies by property, and you will know which applies to yours before you book:
- On some properties, the owner’s team handles cleaning and day-to-day support, and we arrange the extra services — chef, transfers, tours, experiences — through our own local network.
- On others, the owner’s team handles everything, including the chef and the extras.
Either way we confirm in writing, before payment, who does what and who you call. We would rather tell you plainly than imply we have staff standing by that are not ours. After more than a decade on this coast, what we do have is long-standing contacts — chefs, drivers, guides — that we use because we know their work.
What it costs — and why nobody publishes a number
Chef service is quoted per property and per trip, because the variables are real: how many people, how many meals, how many days, what you want cooked, and whether the property already includes staff.
Any site quoting you a single fixed price for “a private chef in the Riviera Maya” is quoting a number that will change. We would rather give you an accurate figure for your actual trip than an attractive one that moves later. Ask when you enquire and we will price it properly.
The useful mental model: for a large group, in-villa dining is often comparable to eating out every night — while being significantly less work, and considerably better for anyone travelling with small children.
Who gets the most out of it
- Large groups and multi-family trips. Coordinating restaurant tables, taxis, and twelve opinions every evening is the real work of a group holiday. This removes it. See Tulum villas for large groups and families.
- Families with young children. Eating at the villa on the children’s schedule, without a restaurant meltdown, changes the week.
- Celebrations. Birthdays and anniversaries where you want a proper meal without leaving the villa.
- Secluded villas. If your villa is in a quiet bay, dining out means driving both ways every night. Chef service is what makes seclusion practical. See secluded and private villas in Tulum.

What to confirm before you book
- Is chef service included in the rate, or an add-on — and if included, how many meals?
- Who provides it — the property’s own team, or arranged separately?
- Are groceries included in the chef’s price, or billed separately?
- Can the chef handle our dietary requirements — allergies, vegetarian, children?
- Is the chef available on our specific dates? (Popular weeks book out.)
- Can the villa be pre-stocked before we arrive, and what does that cost?
- Are transfers included, and for how many vehicles?
FAQ
Is a private chef included or extra? It varies by villa. Some properties include a set number of meals; on others chef service is arranged on request. We confirm per property before you book.
Can the villa be pre-stocked before we arrive? On most properties, yes — send your list and arrival time and we will arrange it. It is one of the most worthwhile things you can ask for.
Do we need a chef for the whole stay? No, and most groups do not. Breakfast and dinner on selected days is the common pattern.
Can a chef cater a celebration dinner? Yes — tell us the occasion and group size when you enquire.
Do you have your own concierge team? No, and we will not pretend otherwise. We arrange services through a local network we have used for years. On some properties the owner’s team handles it directly. You will know which before you book.
