Cozumel is one of the world’s best-known dive destinations, and the reason is geography: the island sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest reef system in the Western Hemisphere, with dramatic drop-offs, coral formations, and famously clear water a short boat ride offshore.

Snorkeling without a boat
You don’t need to dive to see the reef. Shallow reef and clear water are accessible close to shore in several spots along the western coast, and many visitors happily spend a week snorkeling, swimming, and taking the occasional boat trip out to the bigger reefs.
Villa Eden, nine miles south of town, is built for exactly this: two wooden decks on the shore with ladders into about four feet of water over a sandy bottom, five ocean-facing en-suite bedrooms for ten, and kayaks and paddleboards included.

Where to stay for a dive trip
