San Miguel de Cozumel is one of the most sought-after tropical islands in Mexico. Each week, the developed Cozumel port receives cruise-loads of international visitors eager to spend time soaking in the sun on Cozumel’s famous beaches and exploring its private vacation rental villas and condos.

The island is largely untamed and wild, but as soon as you step off at the Cozumel port, you’re in a town full of things to do and see. Above all, Cozumel is one of the best locations in the world for scuba diving — visitors flock here to see what all the fuss is about in its turquoise waters.

Getting to Cozumel

There are two ways to reach Cozumel: flying into the international airport, or taking the ferry from Playa del Carmen. There is no ferry service from Cancun to Cozumel — you can rent a car and cross with your vehicle, or take the ferry in Playa del Carmen and cross as a passenger.

Punta Sur Eco-Park

The largest ecological reserve in Cozumel, this park is full of attractions for the whole family. On site you can see crocodiles in their natural habitat, take a kayaking or snorkeling tour, go bird watching, climb the historic Celarain lighthouse, and visit the Cultural and Navigation Museum — or simply relax on the park’s beautiful beach.

San Gervasio Ruins

San Gervasio is an archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization, located in the northern third of the island. Its pre-Hispanic name was Tantun Cuzamil, Mayan for “Flat Rock in the place of the Swallows.” The ruins were once a hub of worship of the goddess Ix Chel, the Maya deity of childbirth, fertility, medicine, and weaving — Maya women traveled to San Gervasio to make offerings at least once in their lives.
